SODIMMs get their name because they are smaller and thinner than regular DIMMs:
The length of an SODIMM is approximately 2.63” x 1.25” (67mm x 32mm).
The length of a DIMM is approximately 5.25” x 1.2” (133mm x 30mm).
A SODIMM is generally used in laptops / notebooks while the DIMM is generally used in desktops / tower computers.

Each type of memory module contains rows of gold connecter pins that connect the memory module to the motherboard located within the device.

Within the row of gold pins you will see either 1 or 2 slots depending on the memory type. This slot is used to ensure the memory module correctly fits into place on the motherboard, and you will find the location of the slot(s) may change depending on the type of memory.
